Watch Top 14 French rugby on
espn360.com, there are plenty of breaks for replays and if need be
commercials - maybe just not as many. There isn't time for slow motion -
graphically enhanced - 360 degree playback with dueling commentary.
It's rugby, you get on with it.

No one wants to see tape delay
rugby, but a lot of people want to see rugby. If we have to accept only
7's until enough people understand the game and then want 15's, I guess
we have to live with tape delay until the USA fugues out how to market
rugby like the rest of the rugby world.

Re: The Ref Zone: Tape Delay Necessary Evil For USA Audience?

Today, it's impossible to hide from tape delayed match results. Social media entrenches our lives and there's no way to keep the outcome of a game hidden and that ruins the experience of watching a match. Unless the format of the game changed, Americans will have to adapt to the pace and replay structure that it has now much like Americans have slowly been adapting to the same structure for soccer. The broadcast and marketing geniuses in the States need to find clever ways to make the air-time pay off.

My two cents.

Re: The Ref Zone: Tape Delay Necessary Evil For USA Audience?

Are you suggesting that rugby being played at a time-zone friendly time be shown on tape delay for the purposes of replays and commercials? Just want to be clear...

Re: The Ref Zone: Tape Delay Necessary Evil For USA Audience?

I normally like your ideas Cody but I gotta disagree here. Leave the product the way it is. More grassroots work will get more people aware and it will grow from there.

Re: The Ref Zone: Tape Delay Necessary Evil For USA Audience?

The answer is to have some great pro teams play games in the states. Have some Heineken Cup games here and a few super rugby matches as well. Tape delay is not the fix.

Re: The Ref Zone: Tape Delay Necessary Evil For USA Audience?

I would rather wake up a 4 in the morning to watch live rugby.
